Final Average Salary, sometimes called Highest Average Compensation, is the average of your highest-earning eligible years of service, usually the last 1, 3, or 5 years. Overtime, unused leave payouts, bonuses, and specialty pay are treated differently by each plan, so confirm what your system counts before relying on the estimate. A miscalculated FAS by $5,000 can change your lifetime pension by tens of thousands of dollars.
Almost every public pension plan reduces your benefit if you retire before normal retirement age or before meeting a "rule of" combination (such as age + years of service = 80 or 90).
